Werwulf: Release Dates, Cast and Trailer Reactions

Christmas has a plus-one. It has teeth.

There are festive movie plans, and then there is booking a seat for Robert Eggers’ Werwulf. Focus Features lists the horror film for December 25, 2026, in U.S. theaters, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe and Lily-Rose Depp leading its advertised cast. Consider the holiday watchlist considerably less cosy.Focus Features ↗

The film caught our eye in IMDb’s homepage trailer carousel on September 29, where it was promoted with a Christmas arrival and a new trailer. If your seasonal viewing usually involves fairy lights and a reassuring ending, this is a rather different invitation.IMDb homepage ↗ · IMDb ↗

The reunion is real. The menace is the selling point.

ComingSoon reports that Taylor-Johnson, Dafoe and Depp previously worked with Eggers on Nosferatu. So, yes: there is a reunion here, although a werewolf movie is quite the choice for getting the gang back together.ComingSoon ↗

Eggers directs and shares the writing credit with Sjón, according to Focus Features and IMDb. The distributor’s synopsis centres on devotion, damnation and an inner evil. The interesting hook is the collision of those intimate stakes with a monster premise: a relationship can be complicated enough before anyone starts howling.Focus Features ↗ · IMDb ↗

The fan debate: show us everything—or absolutely nothing.

In the September 26 r/horror trailer thread, u/Witty-Association-97 welcomed the restrained creature reveal: “They hid the wolf’s design, good marketing”. Another commenter, u/Wagglesworthy, joked about struggling with the dialogue, then added “Day1”. Anticipation and a request for subtitles can apparently coexist.r/horror ↗

A separate September 25 r/horror discussion included viewers saying they were already sold and planned to avoid further footage. Others were still talking about what they wanted from a transformation scene. These are individual reactions in two horror-focused threads, not a representative verdict on a film that has yet to open.r/horror ↗

Our take: that tension is the entertaining part of a monster-movie rollout. One viewer wants a closer look; the next wants to arrive knowing as little as possible. A trailer can feed both appetites, but it cannot tell us whether the finished film delivers.r/horror ↗ · r/horror ↗

Put the right date in the group chat.

December 25 is the U.S. date supported by Focus Features. The IMDb page checked for this article separately displayed January 1, 2027 for the United Kingdom. Those are different territories, not grounds to announce that the film has been delayed everywhere. An India release date has not been established in the sources checked for this article.Focus Features ↗ · IMDb ↗

If your holiday plans lean toward a dark cinema and a creature feature, Werwulf belongs on the list to investigate. Watch the official trailer if you want the pitch—or follow the spoiler-averse fans and leave the mystery intact. The popcorn decision, mercifully, is yours.Focus Features ↗ · r/horror ↗
